Very cool, I always enjoy perspective patterns. The 17mm end seems just about right here - any tighter and it would have ruined the effect and any wider and it would have distracted from the convergence. The 17-40, as with any other lens, does lose sharpness at tiny apertures due to diffraction. I wonder if you took this at f/8 because of what I said today haha.
To answer your other question, hyperfocal distance is the focusing distance where everything beyond one half of that distance is sharp (within the DOF). It's calculated as the sum of the focal length and the quotient of the focal length squared divided by the product of the f-stop and the circle of confusion (0.019 for our 20D's). You should google a table for it if you ever find yourself in such a situation where you might need very precise depth of field or maximum depth of field without wasting light.
